Photo of The Practical NutritionistSo, who is The Practical Nutritionist? Well my name is Stephanie Matthews. BA (hons) R.H.N. I’m a certified holistic nutritionist and graduate from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. While I do provide general nutrition guidance and services to many clients, my primary focus is on using nutrition to deal with stress-related health problems, which can manifest themselves as low energy and lack of drive, mental ‘fuzziness’,bloating and other digestive symptoms and more.

I wasn’t always a nutritionist. I left university with a degree in business studies and entered the corporate world. Where I spent over fifteen years working in a variety of increasingly stressful roles. I had two children during this time and went straight back to work once my maternity leave finished. In time I noticed things were getting harder and when I say things I mean everything. My energy levels were low, I was often fuzzy-headed and even small issues left me overly stressed. I was getting bloated after certain meals and other digestive symptoms were occurring. I noticed something else too. I wasn’t alone.My husband, who runs his own business, was even worse than I and just about all of our friends were suffering to one degree or another from the stress of modern living.

The Practical Nutritionist - certification logoI began researching into eating more healthily and realized just how much stress impacts the various systems in our bodies and, just as importantly, there are ways to off-set the negative impact through diet and lifestyle changes. It was so intriguing that I left my job and enrolled as a student in the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition.

During my studies and following emergence as a nutritionist, I realised that nutritional and lifestyle advice is too often missing one crucial element – practicality. For most people, reducing the causes of their stress simply isn’t possible in the short or medium term. For others, giving up something like coffee, alcohol or chocolate, might simply be too hard or cause its own form of stress. When I work with my clients, it’s always with practicality in mind. What is and is not possible within the parameters of their lifestyle, personality and goals.

Helping people to help themselves in ways that make them healthier and happier is an incredible job to have and I love what I do.
